August Dance Intensive

August Dance Intensive – Intermediate/Advanced Ballet & Modern
for ages 13 and older

August 16 - 20, 2021 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. $400

Heather Robles, Adrienne Armstrong, and several guest teachers will be teaching a Ballet & Modern Dance Intensive this August. The Dance Intensive is designed to give intermediate through advanced level students an opportunity to hone their technique in a non-competitive, daily intensive format. The 1-week session includes 3 classes per day in Ballet, Pointe, Horton Modern, Graham Modern, Contemporary Choreography, and Core Strength.

Students must have at least 4 years of Ballet experience.

“Mommy & Me” Program - Storytelling, Drumming & Dance

Open to mothers in Newark, Irvington, Orange, and East Orange, Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA) and the Greater Newark Health Care Coalition (GNHCC) present a free 3-week virtual program for mothers and their children ages 0-8.

Based on the West African GRIOT/DJELI tradition, this program will consist of music, dance, and drum rhythms that connect storytelling to movement and music. Mothers and their children will bond while experiencing wellness, healing, and exercise through African dance and movement games, drum rhythms, singalongs, and storytime.

Free virtual class meets via Zoom every Tuesday and Thursday.

Mothers with babies ages 0-4 meet 11 a.m.-12 noon. Mothers with kids ages 5-8 meet 12-1 p.m.

Adult Class Rate Increase

Dear friends,

This has been a very challenging year for everyone. SMAPA has experienced enormous economic uncertainty that makes it necessary for us to increase our Adult class rates. Starting in January, individual classes will increase from $20 per class to $22 per class. And the discounted rate for 10 classes will increase from $170 to $200.

Current 10 and 20-class cards will be honored at the original rates. This includes any 10-class cards purchased before the increase goes into effect, so feel free to buy one or two now! You will still receive the full number of classes for any class cards purchased in 2020. Log in to your online account to buy a new class card at the $170 rate.

While it is never an easy decision to raise rates, we are hopeful that with your understanding and continued support, this rate increase will help SMAPA survive as a not-for-profit arts organization in Montclair.
